Singapore Changi Airport Terminal 5
Although still in the planning stage, Terminal 5 at Singapore’s Changi Airport is expected to be much more than a traditional airport terminal. Rather, it is being designed as part of a next-generation “airport city”—combining travel, retail, dining, entertainment, automation, and wellness into a single integrated ecosystem.
Often referred to as simply T5 or AGT5, the new terminal will extend the philosophy already demonstrated in Jewel Changi, the nature-themed entertainment and retail complex linked to Terminals 1, 2, and 3. The T5 complex will similarly blend shopping, leisure, greenery, and transit into a single retail and services destination. Plans suggest commercial areas featuring large lifestyle zones, luxury shopping, entertainment, and wellness spaces. Singapore-focused cuisine will include extensive dining concepts for both travelers and nontravelers.
The retail design work is reportedly being led by DP Architects. This is the same firm that was involved in designing Jewel as well as several other Changi developments.
The broader Changi East project, of which T5 is a part, is being called an airport city because it will ultimately include business parks, cargo facilities, ground transport hubs, hotels. and mixed-use commercial districts in addition to the T5 terminal and retail and entertainment complex. For example, the Terminal 5 MRT station will connect directly to Singapore’s rail network.
As a result, services at T5 are expected to extend well beyond normal airport offerings to include premium lounges, wellness and medical facilities, automated baggage and concierge services, and digital wayfinding.
Technology-driven Passenger Services
As one might expect, a heavy emphasis is being placed on automation. The contactless processes being developed for T5 include:
- Biometric immigration
- AI-assisted passenger flow management
- Automated check-in and bag drop
- Personalized digital retail recommendations
- Smart queue management
- Contactless shopping and payment
These and other design aspects should allow T5 to operate as multiple subterminals in the event of a future pandemic or similar emergency with flexible spaces convertible into testing or quarantine zones.
Sustainability and “Nature-integrated” Retail
Like that of Jewel, the design of T5 will strongly emphasize natural light, indoor greenery, biophilic architecture, energy-efficient systems, and retail operations that focus on sustainability. Early renderings and commentary indicate that the terminal will feature expansive landscaped interiors with “garden airport” concepts integrated into the commercial areas.
The scale of T5 is expected to be enormous, hosting fifty million passengers annually, making it effectively a second airport campus for Singapore. Commentators have thus described it as Changi Airport 2 because of its size and independent infrastructure.
With some construction already underway, T5 is expected to open in the mid-2030s.
