Madison Avenue Business Improvement District
The Madison Avenue Business Improvement District extends from East 57th Street to East 86th Street along one of New York City’s most fashionable avenues, also encompassing the commercial areas of adjacent side streets. The district includes approximately 250 buildings and over 800 businesses—among them some of the world’s most celebrated boutiques, galleries, restaurants, and hotels.
Matthew Bauer, President
Matthew Bauer joined the Madison Avenue Business Improvement District as its president in 1999. He holds a master’s degree in historic preservation and urban planning from Columbia University and a Ph.D. in planning and public policy from Rutgers.
Innovation Award
As president of the Madison Avenue Business Improvement District, Matthew Bauer took charge of the area’s response to the coronavirus pandemic from Day One. In constant contact with state and city health officials as well as industry experts, he coordinated the response of the retail stores in the district and provided them with regular updates through the health & economic development department relationships he established. “I thank the World Retail Forum for bringing the world’s retailers each week to learn together to recover stronger from Covid-19,” said Matthew Bauer, President of Madison Avenue Business Improvement District.
